Let’s Read Hiragana
30 November 2008
While I was at Fanimecon in May 2008, I got the idea to write the script for a manga to teach people to read and write hiragana, one of the Japanese syllabic writing systems. I have started writing the script using Celtx, a media pre-production application that helps you write comic scripts. The script is in its preliminary stages, and if there is interest, I would like to find someone to do the artwork. I am open to the project being either a printed book or a web site.

You may download the current version (22 January 2009):
- in the Celtx format
- in OpenOffice.org format (what’s OpenOffice.org?)
- in PDF (Adobe™ Acrobat) format
Please let me know what you think of the script.

Manga University has a book Kana de Manga. It appears to be very nicely structured, and filled with a lot of good cultural material.
Let’s Learn Hiragana (ISBN-13: 978-0870117091). This book appears to be heavily educational in its orientation. My script was going to be called Let’s Learn Hiragana, but that would have conflicted with this book’s title.
There are lots of online games for learning Hiragana. I liked this one. There’s an arcade-style game named Slime Forest Adventure (thanks to Elias for giving me the URL).
