Ljubljana, Slovenia–Jul. 27, 2025

Some traffic signs near the hotel. There are also traffic stanchions that raise after 10 a.m. to prevent cars from driving through. (Before and after pictures shown here.)

Varnost Pešcev je na prvem mestu /
Vožnja koles z motorjem je v območu za pešce prepovedana!

Pedestrian safety comes first
Motorized bicycles are prohibited in pedestrian areas!

Pozor, dvižni stebriček / Dostava: 6.00-10.00

Attention, lifting column
Delivery: 6:00-10:00

Stanchion retracted into ground; green light on post.
Traffic stanchions raised; now showing red lights

And now, various pictures while walking around the city center.

Old building at front, castle in background
old cobblestone street
mosaic
Abstract mosaic at base of window
wooden decoration on door
Bronze sculpture of an animal with one front paw raised off ground
Abstract sculpture of person walking with hands behind back.
Abstract sculpture of person with one arm raised above head
Sculpture of dragon at head of bridge

There’s a bridge with dragon sculptures at the ends. (There’s a dragon on the city’s coat of arms.)

sculpture of gryphon

This looks more like a gryphon to me.

Pair of gryphons at base of light pole
Narrow cobblestone street with trees in background

Castle Hill

I decided to walk up to the top of the castle hill rather than take the funicular.

The diagonal metal grooves let rainwater run into the stone gutter at the left.

View of rail for funicular

There’s the rail for the funicular, with the end station at the top.

View down to city from near top of castle hill
Castle clock tower with flags of Slovenia and Ljubljana
View of mostly modern city buildings from top of hill
Windows in brick structures protruding from stone castle wall
View of city with mountains in background; clouds are floating at low height on mountain

Low-floating clouds with mountains in background

Back down to ground level, and more of the city.

Doorway with sculptures of men supporting the columns
religious wall painting
Painting of God shining light down on Mary; painting is surrounded by religious statuary
Sundial with Latin inscription “Nescitis diem neque horam“

“You do not know the day or the hour”, which is some biblical quote about not knowing when the second coming will happen, but rather a strange thing to put on a sundial.

Door with 3-D relief of six people wearing bishop’s mitres.

That’s some amazing metalwork on this door!

A Pieta sculpture in a niche on a wall
Wooden door with handles painted white
Water-pourer sculpture at base of fountain
Large brown-colored buiding
Gold leaf decoration above windows at opera house
Bust of man wearing glasses. It is surrounded by short bushes and three stone columns with spheres at the top
old church with needle spire

Museum of Modern Art

Most of the time, the pictures give a fairly good idea of what the art looks like. In this case, a lot of the pictures weren’t anywhere near as good as seeing the work in real life.

abstract pointy sculpture
Sculpture of old bearded man behind a bed of purple and white flowers
room of sculptures
abstract brown sculpture
sculpture of mans head with distorted features
painting of person with disproportionately large eyes
Woman reaching out to man; two people facing each other leaning back and holding hands; man holding a ladder upright
Sculptures in foreground, paintings in background
three drawings of man with angular features
We don’t want individual art!
We don’t want religious = mystical art!
We don’t want military = decorative art!
We want human art, that is, synthesis
Abstract statue of person from waist up with arms upraised
room with various abstract sculptures
paintings and sculptures
glasswork
Various artworks in a room
Green glass sculpture that has multiple “slices” of curved glass
array of matchbooks
sculptures of animals on walls
abstract fish-like sculpture
giant golf ball on tee
abstract sculpture of mans head
sculpture of kneeling person with arms upraised
geometric sculpture two triangles
sculpture of young man on one knee looking to side
multicolored tapestries
abstract sculpture resembling three tall people
Sculpture of a sphere sliced like a loaf of bread

The museum also had an auditorium; it was showing a movie named “Infinite Repetitions” by Ema Kugler. Here’s an artist’s statement-type summary. I came in near the end, which was sort of freaky but captivating. Then the video started again, and wow, is the first part ever disgusting. I didn’t watch the whole thing.

Tivoli Garden

On to something much better. I didn’t go through the entire park (it’s very large), but did get a few photos:

abstract paintings
Glass holding what appear to be spoons, but the bowls are people’s faces
row of lampposts
Bronze sculpture of two people dancing
Bronze statues of dogs at sides of a staircase. Stone wall in background.
Fountain with sculpture of boy riding a fish that is spouting water

Signage

No, this doesn’t stand for “Not Gonna Lie“. The name translates to “The Smallest Theater in Ljubljana”.

NGL Najmanjše gledališče ljubljansko

This is a plaza named after Saints Cyril and Methodius, who developed the Glagolitic alphabet, a precursor to Cyrillic. I found it amusing that nowhere in the plaza was there anything written in Cyrillic. Go figure.

House number plaque for #15 Ciril-Metodov trg

Interesting name for a bubble tea store.

Cartoonish character drinking bubble tea. Sign reads “Bite Me / Bubble Tea & Street Food”

I like the way someone redecorated the pedestrian on this sign.

Traffic sign with pedestrian symbol spray-painted to resemble a person with a mohawk carrying a guitar and wearing rollerblades

The menu (top half) is kerned properly. The menu holder (at bottom) has way too much space between the G and the Ò. That being said, their blueberry cheesecake is very good (according to my friend), and their ice cream is also very tasty.

Name of company VIGÒ with too much space after the G
