Zagreb, Croatia–Aug. 26, 2025

I made a spontaneous decision last night to visit Zagreb, Croatia for a few days. It’s fairly easy to get there; you take a train from Graz to Maribor, then a bus to Zagreb. Total time is about 3.5 hours.

First, some pictures from the train, and a tunnel in Maribor:

White houses with gray roofs in background; wooden fence in foreground
rows of plants oriented vertically on a steep hill; open field in foreground and houses in background
Tunnel with wavy snake-like decoration on the concrete tiles

Zagreb has “modern” street signs that are easy to read.

Street sign clearly labeling both cross streets

This restaurant is right next to the hotel where I was staying.

Exterior of Butler Restaurant and Bar with a rusted-looking bicycle frame attached to the wall. Also on the wall is a drawing of a butler holding a tray.

There’s a whole length of street with grafitti / wall art; I’ll post more of these in a future entry.

Four apes with glum expressions; the fifth ape is smiling. On his hand is a puppet of a human with a paintbrush in his hand. The puppet is wearing a shirt saying “I [heart symbol] Street Art”

This is a main building right across from the train station.

At left foreground, statue of a man on horseback, holding up a spear. At right in background, a large building with a dome and cupola.

This over-sized chair is in the park.

An oversized replica (perhaps 2.5 meters tall) of a child’s chair

The sun was setting, so I got some really nice lighting for these:

Statue of J.J. Strossmayer; he is seated with one hand on his knee. He has hair like the pointy-haired boss in Dilbert.
Bust of bearded man wearing plumed helmet and mlitary jacket
Niche with religious statue of bearded man in robe holding a book
Semi onion-shaped dome on a church

Later on, I walked north to Trg bana Josipa Jelačića in search of dinner. Along the way, I came across a colony of feral cats; it was feeding time. The people who take care of the colony have even built houses for the cats:

Four feral cats with various colorations
Wooden houses for feral cats. Houses are painted in red, blue, yellow, and other colors.
