Graz: Dec. 29, 2025–Dec. 31, 2026

That about wraps up the year. I think I’m finished with the “new resident / tourist” phase; Graz is very familiar, and things that would have caught my eye several months ago are part of my day-to-day routine.

There are still several museums in Graz that I haven’t visited, and as I visit them, I’ll add those on my main trip reports page.

I have enjoyed taking the photos and writing the text, and I hope they have given you some amusement.

Silvester (New Year’s Eve)

I don’t have any good pictures from the New Year’s Eve light show at Hauptplatz, but here is a fairly good video. I didn’t stay there until midnight; I came home and watched Dinner for One, which is somewhat of a tradition in Austria and Germany. Someone in the neighborhood was setting off fireworks, some of which were of nearly professional quality. Luckily, nobody set themselves or any of the nearby buildings on fire.

Miscellanea

A few pictures of the architecture of buildings near where I live. This is one of those things that I never really particularly saw because it was just there every day.

Carving on a stone windowsill.
Door with intricate carving above an arched frame; text on frame is Anno 1905
Relief of a vine with berries on it. The reliefwork is under a windowsill.
Brickwork carved in a way that somewhat resembles sea foam.
Reliefwork of leaves and vines. It is above an arched doorway.
Reliefwork above arched doorway; featured is a cup with a snake curled around it.

Here’s a statue downtown at Hauptplatz:

Statue of knight with gold helmet and spear; statues is on the corner of a building on an upper floor.

And here are some small figurines that people give on Silvester (New Year’s) for good luck. Pigs are a big theme here.

Trays of small ceramic toys.
