Graz–Aug. 24, 2025

Today I decided to go to the Gösting Ruins. Unlike other hikes, this one was fairly easy. Unfortunately, as the website says, the access to the ruins is closed for now.

The first few photos were taken on the way up.

Small pink-painted shrine; in the shrine are flowers and an extinguished candle
Cabinet with shelves of beeswax candles above a planter with a vine growing in it.

Someone who lives here sells beeswax candles.

Weathered park bench with peeling paint

There are park benches at various places where you can rest as you hike up.

Naturschutzgebiet! Sammeln von Pflanzen und Tieren, Verlassen der Wege und Steige verboten! Lagern u. Zelten nur mit Bewilligung!

Nature protection area! Collecting plants and animals, leaving the paths and steps is forbidden! Camping and tents only with permission!

The bottom sign tells you to keep dogs on a leash.

Trail marker on tree; Austrian flag above number 23 painted in yellow
Two hikers going up a steep slope

The hikers are going up a steep slope, but it looks like it’s downwards in this photo. As the late comedian Norm Crosby would say, “it’s an optical delusion.“

Finally, the ruins!

Jungfernsprung

Not far from the ruins is Jungfernsprung. You can get a great view of the city from there.

Attention! Rockfall and danger of falling rocks in the Jungfernsprung area. Parents are responsible for their children.

No kidding; the fence area near the top has gaps that are easily large enough for a small child to fall through.

Red bordered circular sign with words: Achtung! Steinschlag und Absturzgefahr im Bereich des Jungfernsprunges. Eltern haften für Ihre Kinder

Descending

The first picture is a sign for the Cholera Chapel. I tried following the arrow but didn’t get to the chapel, unfortunately.

Bush with large light yellow leafy “brushes”
Black cat walking away from camera

This cat wandered out of a driveway. It was approachable, but (being a cat) didn’t seem interested in me at all.
