Salzburg–Dec. 1, 2025

I decided to take a trip to Salzburg for a few days to see their Christmas markets. Here are a few pictures taken on the train.

I got in to Salzburg at about 4 p.m., and it took about an hour to get to the hotel, get settled, and then go out again. At that point, it was night (sunset here is about 4:30 p.m.). One side note: the train station here is much larger and nicer than the one in Graz. The same goes for Linz, by the way. I can’t quite figure that out, as Graz is a much bigger city. As I went around Salzburg, it seemed like tourism is a large part of their economy, and that’s probably why they want to make a good impression with visitors arriving by train.

One other indication that tourism is big is that the city maps that you get at the tourist information stations had the Christmas market locations marked on them. That means they printed a special run of the maps just for Advent.

The last picture is a “snowball” (they come in various flavors) that I got at one of the Christmas markets.

Big pastry with chocolate inside and chocolate covering

This pastry has chocolate filling. But not very much. Still, it was good.
