Salzburg–Dec. 2, 2025

First, some pictures taken from the area near the hotel where I was staying:

Blue building with silhouettes of people in many colors
A cutout of man in suit pointing to tire.

I think this guy is a relative of the man at Babe’s Mufflers in San José.

Tire service building; on roof, a large cutout of a man in a suit and tie holding a car tire.
Wall painting of owl; red face, greenbody
Wall painting of a dragon-like creature.
Wall painting of blue origami cranes “flying”
Abstract loop figures painted on side of building
Bus shelter; one side has a colorful abstract painting. At the back of the shelter is a planter.
Vertical rock face

We’ll see more of this hill later...

I made my way to the Altstadt (old town) area and took some pictures there.

Church steeple above clock tower.
Neben diesem Hause stand von 1616-1894 das Linzertor (with painting of a building)

Near this house stood the Linzertor from 1616-1894.

Pizza vending machine

This vending machine bakes the pizza when you order it. I was going to try it, but € 6,95 was way too high a price for a slice of pizza.

Carving of saint pierced by arrows, attended by cherubim.

This is St. Sebastian

Front of church; large reliefwork above door is the saint with arrows in his body
Clock at right angles to a building. Company name is Scheffer; clock is slightly tilted to the left.

The time is correct, but the clock is tilted a bit.

Other side of clock; the upper half of the face is missing.

And the other side is even worse.

Fraktur street sign Köngisgäßchen

Literally, “Kings little alley”...

View down a very narrow street

...and when they say “little”, they mean it.

Weathered carving of a man’s head on plaque dedicated to “Dem grossen Sänger u. Mensch Richard Mayer”

I then went uphill to Kapuzinerberg to see the Capuchin monastery at the top.

There’s a street named after him. The other sign says ”Going on the steps and steps with leaves, snow, and ice at your own risk.”

Stone arch; through arch are steps leading to a wooded area
Wooden birdhouse with door frame in green, on a dark green base
Bust of Mozart, seen from a distance
Bust of Mozart with plaque beneath it.
Person in glasses, puffy white jacket, and English driving cap standing next to bust of Mozart

Proof that I really was there.

Museum der Moderne

There are two buildings for the Museum der Moderne; one is at ground level, the other on top of Mönchsberg. The one at ground level is the one I visited first.

Museum der Moderne, with irregular shaped metal “blobs” on the wall.
Poster of a social media post showing women’s bodies on which quotes from Trump are written in marker.
A frame of horizontal wooden rods with paint on them (as viewed from side)

This looks like a collection of wooden rods from this angle...

When viewed from front, rods form the painting of a nude woman in classical style

...but when viewed from the front, you can see what it is designed to be.

Closeup of painted wooden rods
Painting of a street scene

I was a bit disappointed by how small the museum was. Then the people at the ticket counter told me that the larger one was up on top of Mönchsberg, so I was on my way uphill again...

Monument to Dr. Franz Rehrl; it has his bust on it. In background, a church with green dome/spire.

Artwork on modern art museum. Words in black stencilled text: “Inside of & Outside of Itself”

And now, some pictures from the larger museum.

Cloth canvas with what appears at a distance to be a mass of squiggly red lines.

From a distance...

Closeup of cloth canvas with words embroidered throughout

...and up close.

Rob Voerman

The highlight of the museum, for me, was the exhibit of Rob Voerman’s work. A lot of his work uses cardboard.

Fantastical building with insect-hive look at lower level, white columns at top level.
Room built out of cardboard, with two large oval windows
Closeup of room showing cardboard boxes of rice cake sticks and other boxes with chinese lettering
View from inside the cardboard house

Inside the house

Another model of a “modern above/squalid below” building.
An information panel made of corrugated cardboard

Even the information panels about the artwork are cardboard.

Building model in foreground; projected displays on ceiling in background
One of the projected panels with words Trump Kyiv on a building in neon lights
Painting of dilapidated building at left; at right, a glowing green large shape that is not quite a building.
Dear visitors! In the Secret Workshop you can build your own architecture. Please use the tape sparingly. / There is a photo station on the right. Take a photo of your model in Rob Voerman’s high-rise architecture / You can use the torch on your mobile phone to illuminate it. / You can achieve a dramatic perspective by turning your mobile phone camera upside down.
A workshop with tables covered in small cardboard sculptures.

Pseudo-graffiti with sayings like Stay Cute, Focused Mends, No more bullshit, and Make Love

Museum der Moderne (continued)

And some photos from the other installations.

Wire-frame shopping basket with large rectangular stone in it

Four very large irregular loops made of wood. Two are leaning against the wall, the other two on the floor. One of the loops on the floor extends in all three dimensions
Wooden carving of Saint Barbara. She is rather plump, and she is standing next to a stone tower, which looks small in comparison to her. In one hand she has a wine goblet.

This is not modern; it’s dated circa 1525.

Rings of various shaded wood connected to look like a snake. The piece is suspended from the ceiling.
Two pieces of metal shaped like artichokes, connected by a looping metal cable
Spiral of what look like irregularly broken eggshells.
Neon sign in a heart shape; the neon spells out “fucking beautiful” in cursive several times.

The title of this work is “Fucking Beautiful”

Stairway with cushions in magenta, gold, and gray placed on the area next to the stairs.

Even the cushions on the stairway are artistic.

Neon light piece with four flowers in blue, red, and white.
